You were mistaken in one sentence. Only after…did you realise… This is an inversion form.
Dear teachers, I have some questions on sentence transformations.
So, let’ s take examples:
He spent money like water.
I’d rather___________
We must leave the country on one account.
On no account______________ the country.
When we explain the situation to him, we will understand.
If he____________________.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely, M. Bovary
Hello Madame Bovary,
Your sentences are not particularly appropriate for transformation. My comments are inside the quote in red.
Madame_Bovary:
Dear teachers, I have some questions on sentence transformations.
So, let’ s take examples:
He spent money like water.
I’d rather___________
You might do a transformation this way:
He spends money like water. = Spending a lot of money is what he does habitually.
I’d rather he didn’t spend so much money. = I don’t like his habitual over-spending.
We must leave the country on one account. This is not particularly natural.
On no account______________ the country. You can say this:
On no account must we leave the country.
However, that does not mean the same thing as the first sentence.
When we explain the situation to him, we will understand. This sentence doesn’t make much sense with ‘we will understand’.
If he____________________.
You could transform your sentence this way:
If he has the situation explained to him, we (?) will understand.
It would make more sense to say it this way:
If the situation is explained to him, he will understand .
______________________________
“Madame Bovary is myself.” ~ Gustave Flaubert
I truly apologize. It is “If we explain the situation to him, HE will understand.” I wrote it wrong. Yes, these sentences I find extremely hard, but they are taken from my last exam and I didn’t know how to transform them. Thank you for your time.
Can I ask something(again)?
Sentence like “I’m sure that the United will win the match against the City” needs to be re-written using BOUND. How it will look like?
Thank you!!!
One more thing. Sentence: They think that he is the most appropriate man for that job needs to be transformed beggining with He is______________. I wrote He is said to be the most… and it was wrong. Which is correct transformation?
I think United are bound to win the match against City."
Not ‘the United’ or ‘the City’.
“He is the most appropriate man for that job in their view.”
I have problems with the constructions would rather/ would prefer. I have learned:
when the person who expresses the preference is not the s. of action which follows, we use WOULD PREFER+ object + infinitiv or WOULD RATHER + subject + past subjunctive:
She wants to fly but I’d rather she went by train / I’d rather her to go by train.
So, according to this, how the sentence I’d rather you didn’t tell Peter about it should be transformed beggining with I’d prefer________________
Or these sentences:
The police didn’t at all suspect that the judge was the murderer.
Little___________________________________________________
If you happen to meet Peter, would you introduce me to him?
Is this transformation possible: Should you introduce me to Peter when you meet him?
The only thing that prevented the passing of the bill was the death of the Prime Minister.
Had it no________________________________
Thank you really much for your help. I’m really trying to rewrite sentences, but I simply don’t have an idea.
I’d prefer (it) if you didn’t tell Peter (about it).
The police didn’t at all suspect that the judge was the murderer.
Little did the police suspect that the judge was the murderer.
If you happen to meet Peter, would you introduce me to him?
Is this transformation possible: Should you introduce me to Peter when you meet him?
Should you meet Peter, would you introduce me to him?
The only thing that prevented the passing of the bill was the death of the Prime Minister.
Had it no________________________________
This option does not make sense to me.
Dear all…
I have a few problems with these transformations…A big THANKS for all help by now…
So…
I never have enough time (short).
It is open question whether the candidate will succeed.
It is not ____________
Joe thinks he is always right (mistakes)
My story has been rejected.
I have received__________
THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
Best regards,
M.B.
Is this correct:
The only thing that prevented the passing of the bill was the death of the Prime Minister.
Had it no_________________________
Had it no been the death of thge PM the bill would have been passed.
THank you
Hi Madame Bovary.
I think there is a typo, either in your message otr in the original. It has to be ‘had it not ’
Had it not been for the death of the Prime Minister, the bill would have been passed.
With message #1 , I’m not sure what you were expected to do for some of these, however:
I never have enough time (short).
I’m always short of time.
It is open question whether the candidate will succeed.
It is not predetermined/certain/established whether the candidate will succeed.
Joe thinks he is always right (mistakes)
Joe thinks he never makes mistakes.
My story has been rejected.
I have received a rejection for my story.
Thank you really much.I haven’t thought in these ways. Sorry for bothering.
Best regards.
