Simple Present (Unit 7)

Unit 7

Simple Present

You have already learned the personal pronouns. Now let’s build the Simple Present of a verb. Let’s take the verb “to play”

I play
You play
He plays
She plays
It plays
We play
You play
They play

Remember: “He, she, it – the ‘s’ must fit”

Here are some examples:

I play football every weekend.
You often play the piano.
But: He plays volleyball every weekend.
She often plays the guitar.

 Exercise: Build some simple present sentences with the verbs ‘to come’, ‘to go’, ‘to drink’, ‘to get’, ‘to drive’, ‘to know’, ‘to say’, ‘to run’.

In Unit 8 you are going to learn how to ask questions in the Present Simple.

Dear Teachers,

Please check.

I come
You come
He comes
She comes
It comes
We come
You come
They come

I come to visit you.
But: They come with me to see you.

I go here to discuss some problems.
But: You go and ask my officemates.

They drink juice.
But: I drink too.

She get the documents in my table.
But: They discuss the documents in the office of the manager.

I’m not sure with my answer. Please help me.

Thanks.
Benamarie

sir,
please verify my answers.

I COME TO UR HOME.
HE COMES .
SHE COMES
THEY COME TO SEE THE CINEMA

I DRIVE MY VEHICLE
YOU DRIVE THAT ONE.
HE DRIVES THAT CAR
SHE DRIVES SCOOTER

I SAY
HE SAYS TO ME
SHE SAYS TO ME

I RUN
HE RUNS FASTLY
SHE RUNS SLOWLY.
I HAVE ONE PROBLEM.WHY U ADDED “TO” TO DRIVE,SAY,RUN

Hi swathi,

Please don’t use “u” and “ur” in written English. And be careful with how you use your letters - I’m sure you don’t want to SHOUT!

Again, your sentences are fine. ‘She drives a scooter’ or ‘she drives scooters’, and ‘he runs fast’ is what you should correct. Usually you ad ‘ly’ when you use an adjective, but ‘fast’ is one of a few exceptions.

Take care,

Ralf

Hello,
Here are my sentences about the simple present tense (the answer for your exercise):
Everyday my pet, a Japanese dog, runs to the gate to welcome me. I usually come home from school at 6p.m. I often go by bus. Whenever I get on the bus, the driver says hello to me. He never drinks when working. He always drives very carefully. I know that, and everybody does, too.
What do you think about them?

Hi Sandra and hothu,

Well done - I liked your little stories

Ralf

Dear Torsten

I really like Present Simple and the way you explain it!

As you said, Simple Present is really simple : in Russian you have to change the verb you use six times, special form for each person, and it also differs from its initial form! It’s so wonderful we can use the same form for all persons except for 3rd, singular. So,
I play computer games in the evening. And you play…and we play… and they play… I come home at 6 in the eveninig. And you come…and we come…and they come… Is it difficult remember to add “s” at the end for he, she. it? He comes home and plays…

Thanks a lot.
Best regards
nataliru

I work in the home department. I like to become a writer but I lack the writing skill. My friend has a good writing skill but she hardly use it. I wish I have her skill so that I can write all the pressing issues that our world face today. I want you to judge my writing and tell me if I will ever become a writer.
