How romantic is English?

.
Could you tell me what you meant when you wrote "unfunded" question, Ralf?
.

I meant “unfounded”. Good to know we’re still in touch, Amy.

Actually, I thought you might possibly have meant unfounded, but I didn’t quite understand that either. Thus the question. I thought it might be some sort of Irish thing…

LS

I knew that… sort of. What’s the difference between that and “Ia vas lublu”?

Danke,

Tom

I love you = Kocham Cie (in Polish)

Thanks Michal!

I’d have to go with Russian when it comes to romanticism, and to my native language, Georgian, when it comes to ugliness
“Me shen mikhvarkhar” - “I love you” in Georgian.

I just watched ‘Gone with the wind’ and I find this dialogue very romantic.

Scarlett: Well, I won’t kiss you for it either.
Rhett: [just when she’s ready for a kiss, he changes his mind] Open your eyes and look at me. No, I don’t think I will kiss you - although you need kissing badly. That’s what’s wrong with you. You should be kissed, and often, and by someone who knows how.

I could not imagine the same dialogue spoken in my mother tongue. I think it would sound vulgar.

Funny that, I happened to bump into the exact same scene while zapping around the other day. To me it seemed desperately corny more than anything else, and I’d say people of the western world who saw it at the time of its release sometime in the late 1930s couldn’t help but feel its bathetic touch.

Ironically, a line like “You should be kissed, and often, and by someone who knows how!” would most likely win many a fickle woman’s heart, even today. If only I had known this years ago…

Corny? Oh, come on.

If it was Brad Pitt, all he needs to say is “Hi” and I will be floored.

LOL

you’re such an American female, Nina, it’s not even funny.

(meant as a compliment, and pragmatic enough to be mostly true… in my opinion, anyway)

Brat Pitt, the lucky son of a witch, flooring generations of females…

I always wonder what if a celeb like him wouldn’t charm the senses of a woman with an opener like “HI!” but “Nice dress. Can I talk you out of it?”

Tom, I think you said that twice already 8)

I would probably say “Oh yes, please hurry” and I’m sure my boyfriend would understand.

Eat your heart out, Ralf :stuck_out_tongue:

Come on guys. Can’t a girl be nuts about some actor? I will bet you are crazy about Natalie Portman or other actress  (as far as I’m concerned, she is a really nice actress
and what does it mean, Nina - “Eat your heart out”? I don’t know this expression.

Hee, thanks, Michal.

Are you kidding me, Nina, that he’s that charming to females?

What do you think?

Now, are you kidding me?

What do I think? I think you are kidding me.
I am not kidding you either, Nina. I say, you have a crush for him. haha  People like him may be really handsome outside but who knows what he is inside? The man’s character can charm girls more than an appearance does. Sometimes a good appearance can fool people.

I was just teasing Ralf, he seemed to be so envious of Brad Pitt, I couldn’t help myself  But I think he didn’t get it. I guess, girls can’t really talk like boys can.

I don’t think we get crush on celebrities. He’s only there when he’s there. He is not the one I think of when I open my eyes every morning. Although I used to really like him that I watched every movie he was in, including that boring Seven years in Tibet which I fell asleep watching, but still, I made an attempt just to see him in action. I think I was 15 when I watched that movie. But I highly recommend Ocean’s 11 and its sequels, Ocean’s 12 and Ocean’s 13. Firstly, for the one and only reason that they were really good and entertaining, and, in 13 you can see him and George Clooney crying while watching Oprah. Hilarious!

Now I have another romantic quote for you guys to consider. It is from the film Stardust, said by the Star (as in the star you see up the sky), Yvaine, when she was confessing her love to the main character Tristan.

What struck me the most was how true the words are. It was exactly how I felt when I was in love, only I can’t put it into words as beautiful as the writer did.

Have anyone seen the movie?

Oh! My! God! That is SO a female like thing for you like to say. I can’t believe you like said that at the same time you like compared me to like the other one. I am SO like totally like lost for words I don’t like know like what to say…

The female psyche truly seems to be a bottomless pit (regardless of geographical aspects)
