Happy Birthday, Wilhelm Busch (15 April 1832 – 9 January 1908)

Happy Birthday, Wilhelm Busch (15 April 1832 – 9 January 1908)

From childhood, I remember,
Wilhelm Busch was like a member
Of my closest family
For I can tell from memory
The poems and stories were sublime
That this great poet used to rhyme.

My Grandma gave me on my birthday
On my eighth or ninth, I cannot say,
A weighty tome with lots of drawings,
Tales told in verses, both fun and awing.
Thus I, with childlike curiosity and pride,
Shoved the booklets of Mickey Mouse aside.

And as I was reading one page after another
I learned of the magic and the horror
Which in the minds of youths are brewing,
That a single maid can be three men’s undoing,
That a frog will never be a bird, no kidding!
And that Death keeps a mole from digging.

Today, he’d celebrate his birth:
180 years he’d walk the earth
And would still make me laugh and giggle
With new tales, till my belly would jiggle,
Had, as if at a wild and crazy whim,
Death not gotten the better of him.

Well it’s you who conjured this out of the blue -
Good on you!

Dear Claudia! 15 April is also the Leonardo da Vinci birthday and it is also my birthday. I’m a little proud of it. Thank you for your very imaginative poetry. I like it.

Alicja:-))

Thank you for your very Wilhelm Busch-like praise!

A Birthday Poem for Alicja

You thought you could keep it from the forum
For you are most humble and show decorum
The news of your merry, joyful day,
With cake and coffee or a cup of tay,
(A word of play! Hooray!)

But should you be depressed,
That time has passed, so fast, so fast,
Cheer up, have a drink, and do not fear,
A birthday is only once a year.
So, take it from your friend, Claudia Cuckoo:

A belated happy birthday to you!

Hi Claudia,

Such a pity, that I was born not in April but only on October, the 3rd:)

It seems to me that that day I and one of my classmates and my Granddad were born only.

Dear Claudia, who squeezed you so gently that you gave us a good portion of good poetry again?

Best wishes,
Yuri

A Poem for Yuri on his 1000th Posting

Don’t concern yourself with Plato
For he was a babbling couch potato.
Ignore the engines by Newcomen and Watt
Because horses can do the job.
Never mind Marie Curie
With her Nobel prize in chemistry.
Don’t worry about Sigmund Freud,
Perhaps he was just paranoid.
Forget about Albert Einstein
And his brilliant views on space and time.
Emmy Noether had done the math,
Algebra follows a wholly different path.
Leave Arnold to the terminator,
For you are now a communicator!

Just remember one thing;
____One thing, I ask, don’t ever forget:
All the fun we’ve been having
____Since we first met
Here on the ESL-site called English-test.net.

Congratulations, Yuri!!!

Dear Claudia! I really love you! When is your birthday? I’m not so talented as you are, but maybe I’ll be able create something nice to honour the important your day. You are young and beautiful young lady, so you can say us your full birthday date /definitely not like me/. Great thanks to you. And cheer up!!!

Alicja:-)))

Oh, Claudia, I’m so proud
Of being treated like a king.
The Sun is bright, and no clouds -
There’s only a song you rhime and sing.

Where’s Germany and where’s Russia?
Where’s th’ Rhine and where’s Lake BaikAl?
Just wind the messenger and usher
Can drive some dust to Wuppertal…

Thanks a lot for your congratulations!

It’s funny that you should mention this place. This is where I was born before I got deported by leprechauns.

Hi Ralf!

There were no other German cities to rhime with Baikal. It is funny indeed that it was a place where you were born. But I think any coincidence happens for a purpose.

By the way, is it true that the leprechaun always has one shilling in his purse?

Take care,
Yuri

They are infamous for hiding pots of gold in the bog. Unfortunately, they are also near impossible to spot.

I see:)

I’m happy you like my little birthday poem to you.
I was born August 26 in the last millennium. Teehee.
You have a much better voice than I do. I like it when you sing.

Claudia

Fantastic!!! So cool! I love it!

I live at the Main, which rhymes with Rhine. And I like wine, which is fine, here at the Main. Wuppertal is north-west of Würzburg and kind of far away, but hey! We can scratch Wuppertal and fill in Maintal! Yay!

Claudia

Hi Claudia,

I think that’ll be better:

Perfect, Yuri! Thank you so much for that! Isn’t rhyming fun?!

My Dad’s birthday is two days after yours!

Claudia

Thanks, Claudia.

I used to like rhiming but only in Russian. But you inspired me on a couple of rhymes in English. Happy that you liked them.

A very big hello to your father.

My dear, thank you very much. I see I have a while to think about. I would like to sing something nice for you but there is not ok. so far, with my depression.

Talking about singing on the forum ,I lost all my courage since I realised that the sound on the forum is in much degree changed. I would call it as a trauma ,because I’m in fear to listen not only to my records, but also the records of other people. It can sounds stupid, but it works in this way, when man once get the trauma. It needs time to get rid of ,with it. So , I please for the understanding. Alicja))

That’s okay, Alicja. No pressure.

I hope you’ll feel better soon. Hugs,

Claudia
