You shouldn't drive so fast vs You shouldn't have driven so fast

Hi,

I told you that you shouldn’t drive so fast! You’ve just run into that blue car. Right. Could I also say “I told you that you shouldn’t have driven so fast!”? If the answer is yes, would the meaning be the same?

The first seems more natural in this situation. The second tends to sound as if the fast driving was already in the past at the time of “I told you”.

Well, as they just crashed into a car, the fast driving was in the past. :wink:

The first one sounds like the driver usually goes fast and the other person often tells him or her.
The second one sounds more as if, on this occasion, the driver was going to fast and had been told.

But the first one certainly sounds more natural.
