You are under arrested. vs You are under arrest.

Dear teachers,

I was watching news on TV with English subtitles.
I think that there are some grammatical mistakes in the subtitles, so
I posted them here.
Which of the following sentences from groups 1 and 2
are the most appropriate, teachers?

  1. A
Does anyone know what are the format and form of content of these examination?

  2. B
Does anyone know what the format and form of content of these examination are?

  3. C
Does anyone know what the format and the form of content of these examination are?

  4. A
    You are under arrested.

  5. B
    You are under arrest.

Thank you.

Kitty

As far as I know, and
as for me 1A and 1 B are both correct. The difference is what you are trying to say, and which part you would like to put accent on.
but IMHO 1A is a little bit more correct
As for 2, deffinetely B is correct.
if you are using present form you can not use past form in the same sentence.

But I can be wrong, cuz I’m not a native nor a teacher

Salissa is correct. I know “cuz” I am a native too. :-))

Hi all,
I’d like to improve my english, so please if you have any idea let me know
thanks,

Hope this helps:

  1. A
Does anyone know what are the format and form of content of these examination? <<< This question is wrong. Reason: “Does anyone” and “What are” both are used to start a question, so you can’t have them both in the same sentence. You have to put to be verb “are” at the end of the question. I’ll give you a simple format of how to ask a similar question: Does anyone know what his name is? We don’t say: Does anyone know WHAT IS his name?

  2. B
Does anyone know what the format and form of content of these examination are? <<< This sentence would be correct if you meant “format and form of content” as a group of words that can’t be separated, and the noun “examination” was written in plural form (examinations) because “these” is used for plural nouns only.

  3. C
Does anyone know what the format and the form of content of these examination are? <<<< Same as B, you need to use the plural noun “examinations” with “these”. “the format” and “the form” are correctly used if you mean: “the format of content of these examinations” and “the form of content of these examinations” are two separate things you’d like to ask.

  4. A
You are under arrested. <<< wrong

  5. B
You are under arrest. <<<< this is the correct way to say.
