Hi Mentors,

When do we put yet?

  1. Have you been to Wales or Scotland yet?

  2. Have you been to Wales or Scotland?

  3. I don’t eat breakfast yet. ( simple present )

  4. I have not eaten breakfast yet. ( present perfect )

First of all, although it is not incorrect, 3 is not the most natural form for that statement. “I am not eating breakfast yet.”

Use of ‘yet’ implies that you intend to do so at some time.

Have you been to Wales or Scotland yet? - the speaker expects the listened to visit the countries (if he has not already done so) at some point.
Have you been to Wales or Scotland? - the speaker is making a general enquiry and it is not clear whether the listener has any intention of visiting those countries ever.
I am not eating breakfast yet… but I will eat brekfast at some point.
I have not eaten breakfast yet… but I intend to do so.
I am not eating breakfast - I’m not eating it now and I am making no indication of whether I will have breakfast at all or whether I have already had breakfast.
I have not eaten breakfast - I have not eaten it so far and I am making no indication of whether I will have breakfast at all.
