By now you will know that I was and am a enormous fan of ‘Dynasty’ (the eighties’ version, ofcourse). Stephanie Beacham reprises her role as ‘Sable Colby’ in the ninth and last season She’s the first cousin of Alexis. Sable is after Alexis, in the sense that she is determined to ruin her cousin. When we meet her as a regular on ‘Dynasty’ Alexis is in financial trouble and Sable uses every opportunity to put serious road blocks in Alexis’s way. One day she meets Fritz Heath, ColbyCo’s comptroller, who pays his gambling debts by funds of the company he’s working for - ColbyCo.
Sable meets Fritz Heath, after she has bought his gambling debts of $ 210.000. Sable paid the casino boss, but Heath doesn’t know that until Sable tellls him and blackmails him for information about ColbyCo. At one point Heath says: 'I’m going to pay back all of the money '. Sable answers: 'How? Would you be thinking of dipping into the kitty at ColbyCo again?’ Now, the part in bold, is that a common way of saying these things?
I’ll put in another scene, since you obviously seem to enjoy them, not an entire episode
Great fun - “sophisticated” people insulting each other.
This idiom is very recognizable, though I’m not sure how common it is.
It means taking money, probably irresponsibly or illegally, from some fund or account.
Yes, great fun, as a matter of fact the last season was the best. Grown ups, especially Sable (Stephanie Beacham reprised the role of Sable, a charachter she’d also played in the poor spin-off of ‘Dynasty’‘Dynasty II: The Colbys’ - it was cancelled after two seasons) and Alexis who pester each other like children.
Arinker I like the fact that you take the time to read my posts.
I have one more question about the sentence: 'Would you be thinking about…’
The part in bold I assume is an assumption, because Sable can’t possibly know what Fritz Heath is thinking. Is that correct?
By the way, I’ll put some more clips of ‘You don’t have to watch ‘Dynasty’ to have an attitude’, it was a line in one of Tom Jones’s songs, I think. I quite agree with him, because if you watched it and you were convinced that the ‘Dynasty’ characters could teach you fancy manners and all, you would have been terribly wrong, because the only thing you could get from believing those characters would only have given you a bad attitude, don’t you think? When I watched the show back in the eighties I remained very much down to earth.
She’s assuming the worst, based on his lack of character.
“Are you thinking about…” would be a more neutral statement.
“Would you be thinking about…” or “Do you intend to….” Or “You’re not going to….” would be more judgmental.
A quick search shows that the line is in Kiss by Prince
Now I see that Kiss with with the line “ You don’t have to watch ‘Dynasty’ to have an attitude“ was written and performed by Prince AND covered by Tom Jones.
That’s true. I knew someone else sang the song before Tom Jones, but I couldn’t remember who. Thank you once again for your answers, they’re very helpful.
