Would it be wrong to place a period at the end of the sentence?

Jesus said, “Come to me…”

Would it be wrong to place a period at the end of the sentence? If not necessary, why is it so?

Thanks.

I was going to answer that you need a period outside the quotation marks. But I looked this up and there is disagreement on it. Some style guides require an end-of-sentence punctuation mark outside the quote. Other style guides allow the ellipsis to serve as ending punctuation.

So either way is acceptable.

Jesus said, “Come to me…”.
Jesus said, “Come to me…”

To me, both ways look a little odd when written by itself. But if you follow with another sentence, starting with an upper case letter, the extra punctuation looks better in my opinion.

Jesus said, “Come to me…”. So they came.
Jesus said, “Come to me…” So they came.

The second sentence seems slightly confusing.
