i’ve come to the conclusion that simply throwing money at world hunger is not generally a great way to end it… especially since in many places, hunger is caused by political situations, not necessarily a lack of food. (EG, the UN drops bags and bags of food on a place and a warlord keeps all the food for himself and/or his clan/tribe/family/supporters, leaving many without any rations.)
There is plenty of food available… it just isn’t so easy to make sure that everyone gets some.
You’re right. The world produces enough food to feed everybody, but distribution is one of the main problems. There was the famous incident in the 1980s or 1990s when a bunch of music stars made a recording to raise money for hunger relief in Ethiopia, and as part of this effort people around the world gave more than $14 million to purchase food relief. What they didn’t bank on was that the Ethiopian government was deliberately trying to starve the population in certain areas of the country in order to kill support for a resistance movement. Much of the food literally rotted on the docks, and some food was sold to Egypt for weapons.
Another problem is that when scientists come up with some genetically altered food that grows better in certain countries or doesn’t spoil as easily, tree-hugging fascists in various countries paint up horror stories about it and lobby to prevent its adoption. They give it names like “Frankenfood”, ignoring the fact that humans have been genetically altering food for millennia, except that in the old days it was done in a less reliable, systematic way. (What would we be eating in North America if the ancient Indians hadn’t genetically altered a vegetable smaller than a peanut into those big ears of corn we love? And maybe the indigenous American civilizations wouldn’t even have developed!) So when scientists develop a tomato that doesn’t spoil as easily in tropical climates, or a form of wheat that grows better in weak soil, totalitarian environmentalists claim it’s going to start the apocalypse and try to prevent its adoption. They even use treaties to try to stop it from being adopted in other countries.
Still another problem is that the economy in general in many starving countries is such that people can’t make enough money to eat. People’s rights to their own property are not protected, so they cannot get credit to expand their businesses and provide jobs for other people. Corruption often prevents ordinary people from getting ahead in their money, and the business laws are so restrictive that it’s nearly impossible for productive enterprises that employ people to get started. This means people don’t have money, and they can’t feed themselves well.
And if you want to see a bizarre case of how politics made people hungry, look at the recent history of Zimbabwe. They used to export food, but due to various political policies now they’ve got famine.
