Hi,

Is it “equivalent to”: The swimmer who won the first place got the gold medal? Or the latter is incorrect?

‘The’ is OK before ‘gold medal’, but ‘first place’ is like a title-- it does not normally take ‘the’.

Perhaps this might help you:

  • The team’s youngest swimmers, now in their second season, took first place in the 11-12 Age Group Division and won the gold.
