There are currently close to 8bn people living on our planet 4.5bn of whom have access to the internet according to Statistica.
This means that about 40% of the world’s population still lack reliable and permanent access to the internet. Nowadays, if you are not online your chances of earning a decent living and becoming a fully accepted member of society are close to zero. Especially in African countries whose populations are young and growing at a rapid pace high-speed access to the internet is crucial. For the past few years 5G has been heavily promoted as the primary technical solution to getting the remaining 3bn billion people connected. At this point it’s extremely like that you have heard many times about 5G and all its capability and future potential for economic growth. However, there is another technology that will be available much sooner than 5G: SpaceX Starlink
Starlink is Elon Musk’s latest project which was developed as part of his company SpaceX. It’s a satellite constellation that provides broadband satellite connection to the internet. It is backed by thousands of specially designed small low-orbit satellites which work in combination with so called ‘ground transceivers’. As of now, the network covers large parts of North America and Elon Musk plans to extend coverage to reach global reach by the end of 2021. So, within the next few months millions of people around the world will get access to affordable high speed internet access offered by Starlink as a better alternative to conventional DSL or cable plans.
The reason why you have never heard of Stalink before while 5G has already become a household name is that companies like T-Mobile, Verizon and Vodafone have spent millions on marketing their 5G services while Elon Musk has not wasted any money on promoting Starlink. He is convinced that word about SpaceX Starlink will spread like wildfire because it’s so much better than conventional services and he may very well be right.
