Why not tell me? Why bushwack me in the middle

Just heard the following exchange on Ozark:

Clay: It’s not the Bureau’s job to explain itself to you.

Maya: Why not tell me? Why bushwhack me in the middle of a meeting?

So, how often do you hear or use the verb ‘to bushwhack’? I understand it from the context but I had never seen it before. Thanks.

I haven’t really heard it outside of old TV westerns.
“Ambush” might be a bit more common.
“Blindside”, an American football term, would be more likely to be used now, I believe. The Sandra Bullock movie Blindside begins with a detailed explanation of the term.
