I am doing my B.Tech in NIT jaipur in Electronics and Communication. I am planning to do my Graduation from US in fall 2009 in subject Electronics or Engg management. I gave my gre exam on 26th of sept 2008. my GRE score-- 1280(V 510, Q 770) my CGP — 6.8(out of 10) I need to know which good universities should I apply to? Do I need to give GRE again or will this score help me get into some god university? Which of the above 2 subject should i choose so that i can get into some good university?

Thank you
Amit Barik

i am not aware of how your gpa will be interpretted but the GRE score is fine for almost all universities. they like also their potential students to have some research experiance in the technical fields they apply for. you are likely to get into university of florida, usc, umn, vtech, etc.

hi Ak_barik,
thats a descent score to get into good university. for admission only GRE score is not the factor, everything matter for admission (GRE, GPA, reco letter, SOP, projects, work expe etc… ). can you tell me how much time it took for you to prepare for GRE ?? and how did u prepare … ie what books did u use to prepare etc…

thanks,
pradeep

There are many factors that go into a school accepting you and your GRE score is only one of them.

Every graduate school is different. Some may weigh your GRE score very heavily in their admissions process, while others may pay it little or no attention. The only way to know for sure is to ask the schools to which you’re applying.

Tip: call and talk to an admissions counselor one-on-one (better: schedule an appointment and go see them). Spend time making a good impression; don’t just blurt out your question. Ask them about your GRE scores after you’ve established some rapport.

Why? Admissions personnel are supposed to give you the “official answer,” for example, “We won’t even consider you if your GRE score is below a 1300.” But, after you’ve talked to them a bit and they see you as a person and not just a part of their job, they might give you the real answer; “We tell people 1300 minimum, but truthfully, with your GPA and background, you can probably get in with anything above 1150.

However! The higher your GRE score is, the easier it will be to get into most programs. Even if your GRE score is sufficient many fellowships and TA positions depend directly on your score. “We’ll give the TA spot to the highest GRE score that applies,” or “You must have a 1320 to be eligible for this fellowship.” It really pays to get your GRE score as high as possible.
