Which sentence is the correct one?

  1. If I knew he was hungry, I would have bought him some bought him some food.

  2. If I had known he was hungry I would have bought him some food.

Which is the correct sentence?

I believe the second is correct, but don’t be surprised to hear the first (with the repeated phrase “bought him some” removed).

The eminent Professor Henry Higgins might describe #1 as “the cold blooded murder of the English tongue.”
