Hi @Kohyoongliat! We’re sorry nobody got to you sooner.
As a matter of fact, both sentences are correctly punctuated. Both “I am fine” and “Thank you” make up complete sentences by themselves, which means you can put a full stop after each. However, in most conversations, you’re immediately thanking someone for asking about you, so a comma is enough.
In short, both are correct, but the second sentence is more often used. Hope that helps!
Though Ms Sumejja has given you an answer with a convincing reason, I think the second would look better with a semicolon separating the two sentences. (I am fine; thank you.)
It totally depends on you.
Try to read both sentences and spell them in the following way:
make 1 second pause when you use a comma.
make 2-3 seconds pause when you use a dot.
Give it a try, and choose which one is better in your context and style of talking.
It’s just a hilarious context game, nothing related with a true grammar.
Well, what is the duration of pause when there is a semicolon?
After all, as you said, it’s dependent on the speaker in a spoken context. But the sitiaution changes when it is in the written from.
Both are correct! It all depends in which context you use them!
Thanks, Stewart, and welcome to the forum.
Could you please give example sentences so that I have a better picture, since you say usage depends on context.
