Could you give us some context?

“I am I/me. You are not I/me, that’s why you don’t understand the situation I am in.”

I think most people would say “I am me. You are not me, …” though that may not be strictly correct.

It might help to think of other subject and object pronouns.

Subject — Object
! — Me
He — Him
She — Her
You — You
They — Them
etc

I gave the book to him.
He gave the book to me.

I am me” is no different.
I is the subject pronoun and me is the object pronoun.

Both are possible in today’s English!

To me, grammatically, ‘I am I’ is correct. However, there is fast growing tendency to use the objective form, especially in spoken contexts where ‘I am me’ may become acceptable.

I completely agree and as you so rightly say there is a growing tendency to use the object complement rather than the subject complement. Look at the following:

  • He’s the one you should thank, not I (SC).
  • He’s the one you should thank, not me (OC).
