Which is the correct one?

They went to the movies and had dinner in a restaurant. (not only – but also)

  • Not only did they go to the movies but they also had dinner in a restaurant.
  • Not only did they go to the movies but also had dinner in a restaurant.

Can they both be correct?

The first is the better of the two. The second which omits parts of the sentence which are then intended to be assumed sounds ‘off’.

Thanks.
