For example,
She looks at me as she closes the door.
She looks at me while she’s closing the door.
Are they interchangeable?
For example,
She looks at me as she closes the door.
She looks at me while she’s closing the door.
Are they interchangeable?
Hi,
There’s no difference. But don’t forget to put a comma before As/While in this usage:
She looked at me, as/while she was closing the door.
Regards,
Morteza
Morteza, I hope you will not be offended, but I disagree: a comma is not required. In fact, I’d only use one if needed for emphasis, or if there is some separation in thought; no comma is standard as far as I know.
I didn’t use one before “as” in the previous sentence, nor did I use one before “if needed for emphasis”.
Thanks!
So, these sentences are okay?
She looks at me as she closes the door.
She looked at me as she closed the door./She looked at me as she was closing the door
Hi Cerberus,
You are completely right.
Many thanks,
Morteza
OK Morteza!
Yes, they are okay, Under.
what’s the diference between as and while? I think as work like a comperative, and while works like doing something.
I have been working like prep cook in a restaurant while my daughter works like cashier in the same restaurant
Hi everyone,
I want to share with you these information.
First, I agree with Cerberus that there is no need to put commas.
Secondly, I disagree with Alicia that " as " here doesn’t indicate comparative, notice these examples:
= The weather isn’t as cold as yesterday.
Refering to the above sentences. Yes, Undercoverlover they are interchangeable, but the meaning is different- how-
The first sentence using " as " indicates ( the moment when she was closing the door she looked to you)or to say one thing happining during another, example: Tom slipped as he was getting off the bus.To say that after finishing getting off/ he slipped.
But the second one indicates that " while" is used to show two things happining at the same time ( the closing and the looking happened at the same time, for example:
Alicia read a book while I watched TV.
I hope I’ve been helpful.
