Since it`s a “knowledge based” site, I was wondering if some of you did any kind of sports. Also, what kinds of sports? And what type of sportsman are you? A one who rarely does sports for relief from stress, or one who is an eager sportsman, determined to improve?
Personally, I like to train regularly long running and strength related exercises because:
It is healthy
Makes me look better
Grants me with the great feeling of improvement
I think that knowledge is importnat, but being is fit is just as important. You know the phrase “Sharp mind in a strong body”, or something like that .
P.S. Feel free to correct any mistakes you notice.
I, myself, had play handball many years. As you surely know it?s a team sport and beside of physical fitness you can achieve a good feeling for team-spirit and communication, too.
I also was having long runs ( I jogged) in a big bush and liked that very much. Mostly pleasant was that the grounds on which I was jogging differt over a distance of some kilometers several times and also there had been some hills, so that there were several efforts necessary to stand the distance.
Dancing (yes, it’s a sport – those who’ve tried it will know what I mean!) has been one of my regular hobbies for quite a few years now. I had to drop out of my flamenco classes this year due to scheduling conflicts, but have managed to keep up the belly dancing (or raqs sharqi) lessons. I find it absolutely therapeutic, both for mind and body, not least thanks to the beautiful oriental music.
I also enjoy walking, although I must admit I haven’t done much of that in a while.
PS: What happened to your mare, Michael? Or do you consider that hobby of yours more than just a sport?
I’d say that there is a big psychological difference among people who prefer ‘single’ sports (like boxing or chess), ‘team’ sports and ‘paired’ ones (like pair figure skating).
Maybe I’m wrong, but I wonder whether exercises like jogging or walking can be considered as ‘sport’, in the strict sense of the term.
Even though I hear that it’s also used to mean ‘entertainment’, ‘fun’ or just ‘outdoor games’.
Hi, Tamara!
Yes, it can be put that way. It is just the way you look at sports. For me, for example, anything that is coherent to keeping fit /mentally and physically/ is a sport, no matter whether it`s a team one or for singles.
Dancing, for instance, is a kind of sport that really requires some personally skills and efforts and in that sense, I think, it is good for your physical and mental behave, no matter in which league you do dance. I also wish you to have more time to spend for this sports and enjoy it.
Hm… when we talk about horse-sports I dread to take the point of a druggel. I mean, working with a horse not the human is the sportsman/woman, but the horse is and the human is just the coach. Please think about watching a dressage for the judges is important not to see, or, at least, to see as few as possible of, the human?s helps. Of course, it requires some bodyful skills to ride a horse but the main-work the horse must do and the rider has to give some helps to it only. So, I don?t consider the work with a horse as a sport (physical effort) for me, although I?m going on doing my horse-sports. 8) More physical efforts requires the work around my mare.
Hope you can accept my points of view regarding this theme, although I?m far away from being perfect with it!
I’d love to play soccer enthusiastically .It is indeed a football king and everybody agree that we should play it every time to get more healthier, more zealously and so on. If you are studying in university or college, head masters will require you to know about a subject that related to sports.
Try this out!
Sport, outdoor activities in general, are great but I’m rather lazy.
However I enjoy dancing, jogging, basketball… As I already said I’m very lazy so I do sport from time to time…
In spite of my laziness, I walk on foot and practise extreme running to catch the bus every day!
Hello!
What do you think about winter sport.
In our city (Saratov,Russia) we have 3 months of a hard winter and I and my friends play hockey, occupy ski and snowboard.
Sport is an important part of everyone’s life, it give me a feeling of freedom and inexpressible pleasure.
Did anyone travel on the bicycle in the European countries?
I think it’s very interesting and I hope to try this kind of a trip next year.
To balance my scholarly lifestyle of studying and teaching, I practice martial arts.
I can attest it is one way to relieve the stress, especially those meditation exercises. It helps you develop self-dsicpline, the confidence to do what you first thought was impossible and show respect to others.
Generally , The most important thing to have a healthy life is practice any kind of sport …
but If I don’t have a time to practice any kind of sports …what should I have to do ?
about me , I’m a huge fan of football and Motorsport .and If I were a rally driver , my life would be very exciting …
I play volleyball, sometimes because it is an effective, mainly injury-free and entertaining game (water polo, for example is also great, but it is not largely available).
I want to Marital Arts one day, sometimes i even exercise, but a good instructor wouldn’t harm! At this point team game seems of more interest to me for i like the feeling when the team works as a single solid body: we had a team made up of 3 (sometimes 4) freak physicists in the university and were playing just for fun. Soon we managed to beat the official team who was playing for our university in the contests quite easily. The trick was that we were just playing, we knew what each of us did at some moment and would do at the next one. That was great to realize that you are part of the team that is self organized. we needed no leader - in fact, we all were leaders.
However, the fact that there were only 4 of us prevented us from entering the competitions and recruiting other guys broke the balance So we had to end up just beating anyone who dared enter the playground… that was not a big problem - we play for fun, to relax, to be healthy and dexterous.
I can’t bring myself to say that I ‘m a good sport. Shame on me! I have not gone in for sports for quite a long time except doing morning exercises. In my childhood I used to play tennis and badminton, jogging in the park. But all this had sunk into oblivion since I started working. I like to be engaged in mental sport such as chess, doing logic sums, quizzes. Yes, I’m fond of winter sport, too, but ,Konstantin, unlike your town we don’t have hard winters often, perhaps, once in 3-4 years and as a result, children are deprived of a slightest opportunity to sled.
Hi Conchita
Thanks for your nice words. But do you agree that to be not a good sport is not much of the sportsman? That was my answer and I know the answer.
After rereading your question (obviously) more carefully, Pamela, I realise I shouldn’t have answered ‘yes’ to it. Although the second part of my reply is still valid, you can of course be a good sport as well as a sportsperson.
