What time is it? (Unit 11)

HI dear teacher;
Its forty past nine.
It is nine forty.
Its twelve past six in the evening .
Its six twelve in the evening.
It is half past two.
Its two thirty.
It is five o’clock in the morning.
It is a quarter past ten o’clock in the morning.
Its seven forty seven.
Its forty seven past seven.

Generally we don’t say ‘forty past…’:
‘it’s forty minutes past nine’ or ‘it’s twenty to ten’.

We only leave out the word ‘minutes’ when using digital time or when talking about these times past and two the hour:
five past, ten past, quarter past, twenty past, twenty-five past, twenty-five to, twenty to, ten to and five to.
In addition, we use ‘half past’ (half an hour) rather than ‘thirty (minutes) past’ and ‘quarter to’ (quarter of an hour) and ‘quarter past’ rather than ‘fifteen minutes to/past’.

We only say ‘o’clock’ if it is exactly on the hour.

So, bearing these facts in mind:

‘It’s twelve minutes past six’
however
It’s six twelve in the evening’ is okay (digital time)

It is a quarter past ten in the morning.

‘It is seven forty-seven’ is okay (digital time)
but
‘It is forty-seven minutes past seven’
or, more usually,
‘It is thirteen minutes to eight’.

1:15 it’s quarter past one
2:45 it’s quarter to one
1:30 it’s half past one
alternatively
1:15 one fifteen
2:45 two forty five
1:30 one thirty

It is nine forty.
It is six twelve.
It is two thirty in the noon.
It is five o’clock in the morning.
It is fifteen past ten.It is ten fifteen.
It is seven forty-seven.It is thirteen to eight.

Hello Cachita,

There is no general set time for the ‘afternoon’ period, but usually it is considered to last from midday until somewhere between 4pm and 6pm.

Very often these days the time is written using a single stop rather than a colon, as in 10.15.

a) 9:40 a.m. - forty past nine
b) 6:12 p.m - twelve past six
c) 2:30 p.m - half past two

Thirteen minutes before eight.
It is only the multiples of five minutes that the word ‘minutes’ is not used with when using analogue time.
