Hi Sir? are them true?

Hello,
I want to know how you decide the names of time. Like morning, noon, afternoon, evening and night. I also want to know what should be the correct greeting according to time. Like, if I meet someone at 9:00 pm then what should I say? I can’t say goodnight because I believe that’s like saying Bye. When should we use good-afternoon? Should 2 pm termed as noon or afternoon? What should be the greetings at midday and midnight?
Thanks,
Santak

Hello Santek,

There is no exact definition of what time those particular periods of the day start and end. This is a rough estimation, but views vary from person to person and sometimes from season to season:
morning - 1am to 12 noon
noon/midnight - always 12 o’ clock
afternoon - 12 noon to 4 or 5 pm
evening - 4 or 5pm to 8 or 9pm
night - between 8pm and 4am

You are correct that ‘goodnight’ is usually a closing remark rather than an opening remark. If you meet someone at 9pm you could still say ‘good evening’ as a greeting. If it is later, then it is better to find an alternative greeting (e.g. hello).

2pm is afternoon - Noon is always 12 o’clock midday.

At exactly midday the greeting can either be ‘good morning’ or ‘good afternoon’. Both are acceptable. Once midday is past, then the greeting should be ‘Good afternoon’.
At exactly midnight, then ‘goodnight’ would be correct but see the note above about avoiding using it as a greeting.

Of course, as an alternative when you aren’t sure which to use, you can usually use ‘good day’.

Thanks Beesnees my doubts are cleared.

now its quater to 10 pm

and now a minute past

it’s twenty to ten or nine forty in the morning.
it’s twelve past six or six twelve in the evening.
it’s half past two or two thirty in the evening.
it’s five o’clock or it’s nine in the morning.
it’s quarter past ten or ten fifteen in the morning.
it’s forty seven past seven or seven forty seven in the evening.

Every sentence begins with a capital letter.

Hi everyone,

There are many ways to say what time it is. Here in the States we say: 3:30 (it’s three thirty) just like Sunny says.
or: 11:15 (It’s eleven fifteen) Of course we don’t have to say, it’s three thirty p.m. but when we write then we write. It’s 3.30 p.m. (if it’s in the afternoon) if it’s in the morning it will be: it’s 3:30 a.m.
Some people say the way they like such us: It’s 4:15 It’s quarter to four. Just like Sunny says. Or: 4:55 (It’s five minutes to four)
Sunny you did a good job explaining how to say what time it is, congrats!

Rosario L.

Hi Rosario
4.15 = quarter PAST four. (3.45 = quarter TO four)
4.55 - Five minutes to FIVE. (3.55 - five minutes to FOUR)

9:40 a.m = It is twenty to ten in the morning.
It is nine fourty in the morning.
6:12 p.m = It is twelve past six in the after noon.
= It is six twelve in the after noon.
2:30 p.m =It is half past two in the after noon.
=It is two thirty in the after noon.
5:00 a.m =It is five o’clock in the morning.
=It is five.
10:15 a.m=It is quarter past ten in the morning.
=It is ten fifteen.
7:47 p.m =It is fourty seven to eight in the after noon.
=It is seven fourty seven.

Do you eat fresh fruits everyday?
Do you play yoga?
Do you write a letter to your mother in a month?

Do you eat fresh fruit (uncoiuntable in this sense) every day.
Every day (a two word expression) means daily/each day.
Everyday (a one word expression) actually just means ordinary or commonplace.

You would not usually use the verb ‘to play’ to describe the act of performing yoga. I suggest:
Do you participate in yoga?
Do you do yoga?

Your last sentence seems to be an indication of future tense. (You will write in a month’s time), in which case you would use ‘Will you write…’
I suspect that what you mean is do you write to her at least once a month:
Do you write a letter to your mother every month?
