What is the word for crow making sound?

For dove/pigeon, it’s “coo”.

For some birds, it’s “chirp”.

But, what about crows? Do they have specific word for their sound?

Crows have several calls. The most common is a harsh caw .

Thanks Poran. That’s what I’m looking for.

And Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.”

As far as I know - Crows and Cockerels and a few other types of birds - “Crow”

I agree with Porandokht.

Cockerels (roosters) crow.
Crows caw.

Yes, I don’t usually hear anyone say a crow crowed.

what are you crowing about now Bev - see the word crow and crowing is used for a lot more than just for Roosters - plus IMO its probably a lot to do with were you live

Perhaps I should crow about the fact that I can count in whole numbers.

Im ringing the brain police for you Bev its time you went back in again - they said when you start talking about whole numbers it would be time

Is that what your voices told you, because my voices said you shouldn’t trust them - they are out to get you!

Note to learners: AL is leading us wildly off-topic and you should not worry about trying to make sense of the last couple of posts.

Morning Bev – Perhaps we could make a few more pips squeak out of this “Crowing” term. We all know that dictionaries evolve with peoples perception of the language in the time they are living. The Crow is woven into almost all cultures and languages
Some examples being:
Crows feet
Crow Bar
Crows nest
As the Crow flies
Eating Crow

If we go back before the industrial age most people (Women included) worked and lived off the land. Very few lived in Towns, but after the industrial revolution that all changed and people then moved en masse to the towns.

When people worked off the land(Before radio and TV) – the noise of Crows crowing would have been the most common loud noise that anyone would hear (other than the noise of other people and the odd farm animal) so its no surprise that sayings like “What are you crowing about” were common as they are today.

However in the modern age we only have “Farms” (Pre-Industrial everyones home was a farm)Which is why Cock crowing has become a more common use of the term “Crow”

There is no disputing that in modern day English “Crowing” is more commonly associated with the “Cock” but remember that the term “What are you crowing about” refers directly to the loud noise that Crows make in the fields and trees usually shortly before they go to roost. – Which meant people working the land would have experienced this on a daily basis.
