Hello everyone ,
What is the meaning of stereotype, when and how to use?
regards,
Apeejay
Have you looked in a dictionary, Apeejay?

Point is every question could be answered this way. Rather makes the Forum redundant
Why not adopt the same policy for your favourite pupil, Allifathima?
Gussie
For example, many people think that English teachers from Wales are the most knowledgeable and friendly ones in the world but that’s not true. It’s a stereotype, a cliche.[YSaerTTEW443543]

The point is that not every question in the forum can be answered that way. Only questions about word definitions can be answered like that.
As I’ve told you before, when you were wearing your other head, I adhere to the research that the best learning takes place where the learners are involved in the process and in a simple case like this that means picking up a book or going to a dictionary website and doing the research themselves, instead of being spoon-fed answers. I’m sorry that you are so uncomfortable with the idea of independent learning but it is well documented and regarded.
And incidentally, I’m surprised you haven’t noticed that I do adopt this policy with Allifathima.Or perhaps you have conveniently forgotten those instances?
Tosh - I am not
and I
whatever they may be.
I would say that telling someone ‘Look it up in a dictionary’ isn’t a way of creating ‘independent’ learning’ nor for that matter is regularly answering questions like - Is this correct? Is that correct?
That’s OK then, isn’t i?
No, it’s not… but it is a step in the right direction. How would you respond to someone who wished to know the meaning of a word which has a very clearly defined dictionary definition for the scenario, I wonder?
I almost agree, but with one important change:
nor for that matter is regularly asking questions like - Is this correct? Is that correct?
I am sorry if I had gone wrong way but the truth is I went through with dictionary but still I was not able to understand the meaning so I thought here I could get best answers in easy and with simple examples…my one of the weakness in English is I don’t understand the meanings and get confused when and how to use…that’s made me to ask here…
Thanks
Thank you Torstan
Did you use the learner’s dictionary (link in message #2) Apeejay? It’s written especially for Second Language learners of English.
Do you understand the term as defined there? The examples should also help you see how it is used.
still now i am not understanding these sentences exactly …
The media stereotype of Asian culture
The stereotype of women as passive victims
Definition: a fixed idea or image that many people have of a particular type of person or thing, but which is often not true in reality
so sentence 1 = the fixed idea or image of Asian culture that the media portrays.
sentence 2 = the fixed image or idea of women as being passive victims.
So you got there in the end!
