What is AI (Artificial Intelligence) in your language?

We Germans have adopted almost every other English abbreviation using the English (or rather American?) original instead of a German version. Here are some examples: LTE, HD (High Definition), CEO, SMS, PR to name but a few. However, for some strange reason we don’t say AI for Artificial Intelligence but KI (Künstliche Intelligenz) which is a direct translation.

So what is AI in your language?

In Russian we use the same approach as in German. We say “Иску́сственный интелле́кт (ИИ)” which also is a direct translation of AI - Artifial Intelligence.

In Romanian it is IA (inteligenta artificiala), so exactly the same letters but reversed, because here the adjective follows the noun.

How important a topic is AI or IA in Romania nowadays? Are Romanians aware of the potential of AI or are they afraid they are going to lose their jobs to algorithms and robots?

The managers of the factory where I’ve worked for many years made a lot of changes in time.
The technology had to be renewed in order to increase the production, the productivity and quality. So gradually, in a lot of key-points showed up so-called robots in order to increase the productivity. On the other hand, there was the need to reduce the costs of the production. Obviously, each time the employees worried they would lose their jobs and some of them did, but others were redirected to other operations that still needed personnel because the production increased in all points, including those unautomatized.
Generally yes, people fear from AI because it means more machines and less workers. On the other hand, people are flexible here, and learn fast new technology so they adapt quickly.

Hello Monica, it’s very interesting to hear how people in Romania are responding artificial intelligence and it looks like your company has been taking the right decisions at the right time. May I ask what your company produces? I read that Samsung has now built a brand new factory in your neighboring country Hungary which will be manufacturing graphene batteries for cars. There is so much technological change going on worldwide that I find it hard to keep up with all the latest technologies.

In Hungary the Artificial Intelligence means Mesterséges Intelligencia, and we use it as MI, but it means the same (Artificial = Mesterséges).

Hello, Natalia!
Yes, it’s difficult to keep up with the technological progress, but otherwise no production company can survive anywhere.

Interestingly enough, Microsoft has recently started running a TV commercial campaign in Germany using the English abbreviation ‘AI’ rather than ‘KI’ although KI seems to be the standard in Germany.
