I know what a pit bull is but what is a “bull-pit”?

Bull- pit means : an aggressive and tenacious person. I don’t know whether it is correct or not, please correct myself Sir, if you find,it is not correct.

Well, judging by the context I found the word in I would say it must be some kind of special room or part of an office space.

Nope, they use the term several times throughout the book which was written by an Australian.
