what does "to its core" mean in this sentence...

Hello everybody, I would be glad if someone tell me what does “to its core” mean in this sentence:

Patients view the medical profession as selfish to its core.

thanks in advance,

Selfish to its core = fundamentally selfish; selfish by its basic nature

This use of ‘core’ is also used in the expression: ‘rotten to the core’ suggesting bad/corrupt through and through -the core being the central part of a fruit such as an apple.

Hi dear Mister Micawber and Alan,
