“Flat” is a British word for a (often low-rent) apartment.
Thank you.
The word is used in the US to indicate a rental unit that’s all on one floor.
If the rooms are all in a row, as opposed to having rooms side by side, it’s called a shotgun, a shotgun suite, or a shotgun apartment, eyc., the idea that a single shotgun blast could enter all the rooms. It couldn’t, of course; shot doesn’t have very much penetrating power. But a pistol could do it.
The cheapest apartments tend to be studio apartments where the living room doubles as a bedroom. They used to have Murphy beds that folded in the wall. I haven’t seen one of those in 50 years; these days, they use sofas that fold out into a bed instead.
Our Tort System:
I can’t help but notice that, by population, the USA should have (statistically) 775 gun-related murders, compared with the UK. The USA has 32,000.
Please understand: while you see yourself as a saint upholding the Second Amendment, others in the world can’t understand why a constitutional law that may have had relevance over two hundred years ago, is today revered more than human life, and sanctified.
I don’t think this forum is a platform for anyone to parade a political opinion as an adjunct to their every post.
Did you know that “cigarette smoking causes about 1 of every 5 deaths in the United States each year”? In other words, smoking kills 443,000 people annually, and that kind of pales in comparison with the 32,000 deaths you’re citing.
But you don’t see anyone banning cigarettes.
Then “in 2010, more than 10,000 people died in U.S. highway accidents involving a drunk driver”
But you don’t see anyone banning fast cars and/or booze
But everyone seems bent on banning guns EVEN though they kill far less than alcohol, cigarettes and cars. A paradox!
Plus guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens DON’T kill.
They should instead focus their efforts on diagnosing and curing mental disorders in crazy people, because, especially in NY, there are a lot of crazies walking the streets who talk to themselves and are accidents waiting to happen (but crazy people have been known to use knives to kill and noone bans knives to my knowledge).
For example, the Connecticut shooting could have been avoided if Adam Lanza had been treated for his mental disorder, but noone did anything about his mental health and that’s why it happened.
The Second Amendment, and gun ownership is more than just a vestige from the nineteenth century, it’s an integral part of the American lifestyle and culture.
.
But, let’s NOT talk about guns here because it’s off topic. :))
