Sometimes I look for a word in a dictionary, but I find many meanings. Some of these meanings make no sense to me. One of them is “Paramount”. I don’t know how to use it. I searched the web, but the examples made me more confused.
Can I say, for example, it is paramount to take an adequate water with you if you are going to travel in desert.
Would anyone explain it to me and how can I use it?
Hello,
Since Paramount means more important than any other things, hence your example is the perfect application of the “Paramount”. Because, in fact, the water is the most important thing in a desert.
It is paramount to take an adequate amount of water with you if you are going to travel in the desert.
Usually we would say ‘It is of paramount importance to take…’
(Also, unless you mean travelling from place to place within the desert, the usual preposition is ‘travel through the desert’).
Thank you Pedram and Beeesneees for your clarification
Actually what confused me was the name a movie maker called “Paramount” (a logo on top of a mountain). Now I understand they means “we are the best in this field”, isn’t it?
