What do you think of emails as a means of communication?

Hi,

What do you think of emails?

A

Alan,

You made me stop and think for a while. I really can’t remember when was it last when I sat and wrote a ‘real’ letter. Not that I’m saying that emails are unreal, but we have to admit that they belong to virtual reality…
I send emails only in two occasions: to business associates and to friends (with the latter only to exchange those funny stories, pictures etc., but only decent and really funny ones).
And, as for your question about ‘emailery’, maybe the solution can be ecorrespondence?! A little awkward to pronounce, but, who cares, we will type it anyway!

Hi,

what’s letter?!

really, I didn’t write any letter in my life, but I and my family used to phone very much.
now I use to e-mail … and I send many subjects from it to my friends and to my lover (love letters   ) and to my clients.

Ah!!!
what 's meaning it?

regards,
Mba

Hi Mba
It occurred to me that eCorrespondence stands for electronic correspondence (as in e-book).

thanks Pamela!!! :)))))))))))))))))))))))))

i once talked about this with my students
they all agreed we are both enjoying the benifits and regreting the lack of
emotional contact
technology has transformed our lives

Hi Alan:)

I think I use e-mails most because of my friends are away of me:( and I have a lot of friends who are far away, in other countries for getting education. So, I write lots of e-mails them. And I like writing e-mails, I have ability somehow to describe things, and also to tell an event that have happend to me like a story. That’s why my e-mails look like short stories:) In fact, e-mails are the most used means of communication to me, as I don’t like talking on phone-boring thing for me

As for the Alan’s story, hmmm I guess e-mails destroy all the pleasure of reading famous persons’ handwritings, for we can’t find their passwords and read e-mails.When they pass from life, how we can read their letters, if they haven’t written letters or recieved them??? And we share our feelings by writing e-mails to our friends, lovers, relatives… then we sometimes delete them. What’ll happen if we want to read them again in order to feel the same feelings again, how can we find them? It’s great pleasure to read old letters and also our notes that we took in the past, for example, in our childhood, yes? Yes, I always become very happy when I find some notes of mine, or my grandma letters, or mom and dad’s letters…What will happen if we won’t save our letters-mails…no pleasure to find old letters, no pleasure of reading them…in the future…seems fearful. And I guess this is the bad side of e-mails(as all new technology) Okay, let’s then take copies of really important mails for us, then we can read them when we need to feel the same:) oh I think I’ve solved worldwide important problem:) Never lose your hope!!!

Hello everyone,

Just a quick note to let you know Ralf has now recorded Alan’s text and you can listen to it here.

Let me know how you like it.
Thanks,

Kudos, Ralf. Love that Irish lilt.
And that last little bit (about where to click) was certainly a creative little addition.

.
Why not also add a little notation for ESLers letting them know what sort of accent they’re listening to? Just a suggestion.

Hi Amy,

Thanks very much for you comment  I know I’m not yet close to Fionnuala Sweeney, but maybe one day CNN will offer me elocution classes and a 60k day job for the Gaelic sports section :stuck_out_tongue:

Hi Mr .Ralf ,

Your record is as great as the topic of Mr. Alan . I liked it so much especially your Irish accent which is simmilar to westlife band ( my favourite band ) .

I know that you have a song. Do intend to participate in westlife band soon ?? just kidding

Thanks alot .

Hi Mr.Torsten ,

It is a great idea . It helps us to Pronounce correctly .

Thanks for your great efforts.

Ralf, it was like music to my ears. I never really paid attention to Irish English but I think I’ve fallen in love with the accent.

Thank you guys, I’m walking on air

Emails are a very powerful mean of communication – within seconds posted to almost every place round the world! Just in time communication for 24 / 7…
But this is not allways an advantage.

First of all the shear number of emails can be a real problem today! I don’t speak of spam mails, they can be reduced to a very small number by an appropriate firewall, but all the rest! It has become so easy to send a short message by email, that a lot of people write one immediately when they can’t let’s say solve a problem right-away. And you are expected to answer them within minutes! If you don’t, they will call you back to remind you in a reproaching tone about your duty!
I wonder what time it takes for each one of us per day to deal with that sort of emails! It’s also likely that you miss an important one between loads of others…

But more importantly you receive tasks and orders on very short notice.
Ten or fifteen years ago it was clear, that everyone had to do his own work in the first place, instead of allways answering emails in a jiffy. When there was a question, you got a phone call. You could answer it right-away or say how much time you needed to reply. If you knew, that the phone caller had unpleasant or impossible tasks in store for you, you could even tell your secretary not to be available.
There’s no way to do this when you get an email. Once received, you have to react…

And what’s the situation when you start a new task for someone today? A couple of years ago, you got the information needed smoothly bundled up so that you could start your work with all the relevant facts and wishes of your client or business partner. Nowadays no one thinks it to be necessary to go into details when starting a new task - additional information can be posted at any time afterwards by email.
But this has the negative effect that a client or partner does not think thoroughly what you really need to know for being able to do the job properly, and what information is crucial for you to get straight to the right result. So you send something back and then you often have to redo your work!

Sometimes I wonder how our fathers and grandfathers managed to achieve their goals without all those means of communication we dispose of today. But they succeded and often under very difficult circumstances! I even dare to say that a lot of work nowadays is not done more efficiantly than in the old days, but takes in fact the double time - BECAUSE of our superb means of communication. What a pity! That has certainly a great deal to do with human nature – another topic to discuss?

Perhaps our ancestors were considered too weather they should or shouldn’t
stop writing on stone plates and use papyrus… :))

Emails are not tangible, but they still can carry words of the same importance as the
paper-made letters. Maybe we are heading to the times where not the wrapping but the
content is the most important…

Hi! I think it was enough said about emails how suitable but not always that kind of communication is. I send and get emails every day, this is a part of my life :-).
But I must admit I like Ralf’s record a lot. His pronunciation seems very clear and he does not hurry. Of course it is very hard for me to hear the difference between British and Irish English, the main thing is to understand what do Brandee and Ralf talking about.
