Hi all, I don’t understand purpose of “in” in this circumstance. Whether this question is different or not when I can modify above question by remove “in” and only use Which as RELATIVE PRONOUN? :
"What do you image are the best countries which to raise a child ? "
Thanks in advance
You need the preposition “in” because children are raised by people in countries. If you remove the preposition “in” the relationship between the verb “raise” and the nouns “children” and “countries” gets blurred. Please let me know if this makes sense.
Sentences like the above that include ‘in which’ have a formal/academic register. In everyday conversation we would say, ‘What country do you think is the best to raise a child in?’
thank you so much , your answer is so clear
thank for your clear answer <3
This sounds natural, formal and good to me.
This should look still better: ‘Which country do you think is the best to raise a child in?’ because the number of countries is fixed and known.
This is very sad and shows that we are on the wrong track.
