Hi Nessie

I would interpret “the high scorer” to be one person – the person with the highest score. The word “the” is important. If you used “a” instead, then I would understand “a high scorer” to simply be one of a number of people with a high score.

If I wanted to refer to the (group of) people with the highest scores, then I might say “the high scorers”. Of course, I could also say “the people with the highest scores”.
