Hi,

If I wanted to say “Hi” in French, how do I say it?
vs.
If I want to say “Hi” in French, how do I say it?

I hear people use the past tense in imaginary and present unreal situations, but, I might want to say “Hi” in French who knows in the future if I go to France; where the situation is rather unsure.

Which is correct in this context?

Either will suffice; no one will challenge your choice in conversation, but:

If I wanted to say “Hi” in French, how would I say it?– You are unsure whether you’ll have a chance to say it.
If I want to say “Hi” in French, how do I say it? – You think you’ll have a chance to say it.
