waive vs. give up

here is the sentence:
Because of its excellent record, the ‘60-minute rule’ was waived for 3-engined Boeing 727s allowing them to fly transatlantic.

Can I use ‘given up’ instead of ‘wavied’?

Not a good synonym. Waive a rule = to put aside, suspend or dismiss a rule.
