Visited vs had visited

Stomper Anon had visited the hawker centre at Block 20 Ghim Moh Road last month, but did not elaborate on the date and time.

Should it be “visited” instead of “had visited” because of “last month” in the sentence?

However, ‘Though Stomper Anon had visited the hawker centre at Block 20 Ghim Moh Road the previous month, he did not elaborate on the date and time.’ should be acceptable.

Lawrence gives a good example of how the past perfect should be used. I should like to add that sometimes in conversation we use the past perfect to emphasise an action when it does not necessarily follow strict grammatical practice. For example -

I had indeed understood your meaning when you made that statement.

In the original sentence by saying ‘he had indeed visited’, you could justify the tense by emphasising the fact that ‘he did actually visit. …’
