Can you please explain me when do we use the word abase with examples
***** NOT A TEACHER *****
Hello, Hardwork:
In my opinion, in 2013 most people are taught NOT to abase themselves. It means to speak or act in a way that shows that you think that you are not so good as someone else. For example, Mona is always abasing herself:
Tom: You are very beautiful.
Mona: No, I’m not. All the other girls here are prettier.
Alicia: I really like your dress.
Mona: Really? My brother told me that it makes me look fat.
George: You are the smartest student in this class.
Mona: I don’t think so. The only reason that I get the highest marks is that the other students are too busy to study. If they wanted to, they could get the top marks in this class, and I would be at the bottom.
Teacher: Mona, when I came to class this morning, why wasn’t the coffee already made? You know that you are the coffee monitor, don’t you?
Mona: I’m sorry, sir. My mom was sick last night, so I had to take her to the hospital. And this morning, I overslept and got to school late.
I promise that from now on, I will always have your coffee ready for you. It is such a great privilege for a stupid person like me to be in your class.
Teacher: OK. I will forgive you this one time.
Mona: Thank you, thank you, sir. You are such a generous person.
Teacher: I know.
Jane: Are you coming to the dance on Saturday?
Mona: Of course not. No boy wants to dance with an ugly girl like me.
