Use of the word "home"

Hello,

Could you pick out the sentences that are correct from this list:

  1. Durham, North Carolina is best known as the home (to, of) Duke University.
  2. Durham, North Carolina is best known as home (to, of) Duke University.

I’m also not sure which preposition to use here - to or of.

Sentence 1 (with “the”) is correct. The preposition would be “of” in this case.
