use of adverb

  1. Some adverbs are compunds of a preposition and an adjective:as,
    Abroad,along,aloud,anew,behind,below,beyond
Can you please explain this sentence with these egs, which are prepositions and adjective in these words.

  2. Some adverbs are compounds of a preposition and an adverb;as,
    Within,without,before,beneath

3)When do we use “by and by”
can you expain me with eg

I don’t understand the question at the end of No. 1. You ask us to explain “this sentence,” but there is no sentence to explain.

Use “by and by” where you would use “soon.”

You will get stronger by and by.

Can you please tell me in Question 1 and 2 which are the preposition and adjective, preposition and adverb in question 2 .

Hello Mordant,

oxfordadvancedlearnersdictio … onary/by_2
by and by (old-fashioned) before long; soon

  • By and by she met an old man with a beard.

As the dictionary says, the phrase is obsolete, isn’t it?

I can tell you that “abroad” is not a preposition. Like “anew,” it is an adverb. The same is true of “aloud.”

Sing along. - Adverb

Ride your bike along the side of the street. - Preposition.

You are behind in your school work. - Adverb

“Abroad” and “behind” are the only ones that can be adjectives. I have answered the other questions on use. Many of those words have multiple functions – they can be either adverbs or prepositions in different uses – and I have shown you examples of their use as adverbs and as prepositions. For instance, “within” can be a preposition or an adverb, and I have provided you with adverbial and prepositional uses as examples. I don’t know what more you want.
