usage of "offer somebody resistance"

Hi, everybody !

Could you tell me if you find these sentences natural, please:

I would leave out the “me” and say he offered violent resistance.

I would leave out “down” and say I broke his resistance. However, if you broke his resistance, that would mean he had stopped resisting, and you probably wouldn’t have to hold him down. So in that case you should say that you overcame his resistance.
