Up to (Upto) & Up till (Uptill)

  1. Though I often find the use of ‘upto’ and (rarely) ‘uptill’, I’m not aware of any authentic source that accepts them.

  2. Isn’t it correct and necessary that we use ‘till’ with time, date, day etc and ‘up to’ with distance’? Can we say ‘They usually work up to 7pm.’ is fine?

Lawrence,

I’m really not familiar with

  • they do sound particularly odd to my ear. I tend to use ‘up to’ with quantities and lengths and to emphasise duration I would say ‘up until midnight’ or ‘till/until’ with expressions of time.

Yes, Alan, I doubted it to be InE. So I wanted to confirm the position. By the way, what about ‘up till’ which looks like ‘up until’? I think it should be okay too.

Yes, indeed.

Thanks a lot.
