unfortunately no/not

Maybe it’s a stupid question but the answer of the following question is no or not and why:

Are you American?
Unfortunately not/no.

Both may be used. I would normally use “not”.

Hi,

‘Not’ answers the question directly as it is a contraction of ‘I am not’ and would be my choice, too.

Alan

So in this case should be used ‘no’?

Do you like ice-cream?Unfortunately no.

No, it’s the same principle as before, except that in this case “not” would be short for “I do not”.

Could you give an example with ‘no’ ,please?

Unfortunately not.

When combined with ‘unfortunately’, ‘not’ is usually preferable. I can’t think of an example where ‘no’ would be correct but ‘not’ would be incorrect.

can u giev me explain more clear???
