essay
The article chiefly states that humpback whales might migrate long distances through navigating by the stars and it boslsters this idea with three reasons. In contrast, the lecturer contends that this mentality is completely debatabe, citing three diverse reasons to contradict the points made in the reading passage.
First of all, the text specifies that humpback whales’ brain help them to use stars to navigate by. Conversely, it is stated by the speaker that there is no strict connection between the level of intelligence and this ability, navigation by stars. For example, some ducks which use stars for similar porpuse, have average intelligence but they can do this instinctively.
Furthermore, it is emphasized in the reading that migrating in straight lines prove that humpback whales use stars for so; nevertheless, the professor casts doubt on this point by stating that, beside stars, some external forces might help animals to navigate. For example some animals which have sensitive bodies to magnetic field of the earth use it to navigate while migration.
Finally, the article makes it clear that humpback whales sometimes float straight up and it means that they look at the stars to navigate by. On the contrary, it is mentioned by the speaker that some animals like sharks, which never migerate, do the same action but to hunt and not navigate by the stars. Sharks also look up in days, when stars are not visible, and it proves that this is a pure exploration action.
