The artcicle chiefly states that creating new stricter regulations for holding and storing coal ash is not a good decision and it bolsters this idea with three reasons. But the lecturer contends that this mentality (what is a better word instead of mentality?) is compeletely debatable, citing three diverse reasons to contradict the points made in the reading passage.
First of all, the text specifies thatsome regulations exist that obligate companies to use liner in every new disposal pond they build. On the contrary, it is mentioned by the speaker that the already regulations are not sufficient, because they are about the new pond or landfill, but what about the old ones? She thinks that coal ash might leak from the old pond or landfill into water and environment.
Furthermore, it is emphasized in the passage that new regulations might concern people that the recycled coal ash products are too dangerous and so they do not buy them; nevertheless, the professor makes doubt on this point by saying a similar experienc about mercury, which is very dangerous, but people use the material made of well-recycled mercury and it will not be a concern.
Finally, the article makes it clear that the new stricter reglualations will increase the costs for power comanies and they will increase the cost of electricity. In contrast, it is mentioned by the teacher that this new regulations will increase the costs of power companies about fifty bilion dollars and it also increses the price of electicity only one percent, so creating new stricter regulations is a well-worthy decision
Hi Tesoke, I think you did a pretty good job with this one. You got most of the points in the lecture, but I think your explanations could have been a little more clear. You did mishear 15 as 50, but I don’t know how big a mistake that is. I think you did a better job in this one in giving enough information from the reading to make the contrast in the lecture clear. This seems close to a 4 out of 5, but it might only get a 3.5.
