Topic24: Should a city try to preserve its old, historic buildings or destroy them and replace them with modern buildings?

These days, many cities bulid modern buildings. Although I like some of them, I think that a city should try to preserve some old buildings because of three reasons. We can learn historic and traditional facts from the buildings. Next, I think that it is the current generation’s responsibility to leave them for the future’s generation. Moreover, we can also enjoy the buildings.

First of all, we can learn some interesting information from the historic buildings. When we go to the buildings and see them, we can learn some facts about what the city was old in the past. For instance, we can understand the people’s tastes about the building’s appearance, such like color, design, and the shape of roofs, and we may be able to learn even the region’s history. Also, it means that the historic buildings include educational value. It can be good educational materials for children to learn deeply about the places that they live in.

In addition, I think that leaving some old, historic buildings is our responsibility. We can build modern buildings at any time. However, once old buildings are destroied, we are never able to build the same buildings even though we want to rebuild them. Old buildings have educational value, as it is stated above, and many intersting characteristics of the time. Therefore, Trying to keep such the buildings for a long time is benefit both our offsprings and us.

We can also have fun. There are often some funny buildings. For example, I know an old building that were made of bamboos in my region. All furniture inside the building was made of bamboos. We can touch them and enjoy the feeling. Such the building itself is precious and significant today because many buildings are made of unnatural materials, such like concretes.

To sum up, old and historic buildings provide educational and intersting facts and enjoyment. Preserving such the buildings is very important. Therefore, I think that a city should leave its old buildings.

TOEFL listening lectures: A university lecture by a professor of History

Hi Doshima, I thought this was one of your best essays. You have a good overall structure, although I think it is better to combine the thesis statement into one sentence as I have done. You have many good examples - I especially like the bamboo building. You have a few minor grammatical errors, but not too bad. Some of your sentences are not structured quite right and there are some odd sounding phrases, but nothing that was unclear or confusing. Overall, I would rate this a 3.5 out of 5.

I was motivated a little by your comment although I didn’t think that this essay was very good when I finished this task.
Thank you very much for your advice
