Top characteristic of a friend.

What do you want most in a friend — someone who is intelligent, or someone who has a sense of humor, or someone who is reliable? Which one of these characteristics is most important to you? Use reasons and specific examples to explain your choice.

Everyone longs for congenial friends; hence, friendship should be cherished and treasured. There are many virtues that a friend should have, namely: intelligence, good sense of humor and reliability; however, as for the top quality of a friendship, trustworthiness is the most important value that I look for in a friend.

Although I like to hang out with smart friends from time to time, so as to talk about meaningful topics, having extremely intelligent pals may be detrimental to me; in that they may distract me, rather than help me. They frequently come up with metaphysical issues, while I try to grasp a thorough understanding of my lessons, or concentrate on my duties. What is more, they may try to impose their thoughts over my ideas; even if their arguments are very wrong, since whoever has the ultimate word will be the winner. Therefore, instead of having buddies with elevated cognitive ability, I would prefer to be surrounded by companions with higher emotional intelligence, because they are opportune and sincere.

Even though I love to gather together with humorous friends, as they make me laugh a great deal, I cannot count on them in difficult times. This is because, they usually joke about non-sense matters, when we should face difficult tasks. Thus, time is wasted, and difficulties are not overcome. Additionally, they may think that my problems are too light, so they do not bother helping me. As a result, I find it further significantly pleasurable to be able to rely on my trustworthy companions, as they usually lend me a hand in overcoming my frustrations and fears. They are not afraid of telling me when I do something wrong, so that I do not make the same mistake again and again.

Summing up, reliable friends are at your side when and where you need them the most; they cheer you up when you feel emotionally depleted; and they persuade you to follow the right path. They enrich your life, because they are timely and unconditional pals. Therefore, I should do my best to be a dependable friend as well.
