Toefl Writing 4 - How to Use Land

  1. In your country, is there more need for land to be left in its natural condition or is there more need for land to be developed for housing and industry? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

In my country, Japan, there more need for land to be left in its natural condition than to be developed for housing and industry. There are three reasons: Decreasing of the population, moving of factories abroad and preservation of nature condition for sightseeing.
First, the population of Japanese has decreasing rapidly. It is because the younger generations tend not to have any children or to have only one child. It means that needs for houses will be also decreasing. In addition, the young can buy or rent used housed because there have been already enough number of houses and they are strong enough to live for more than fifty years. So people do not need to build many houses in Japan.
Secondly, many factories have already moved to other countries from Japan. It is because salary of Japanese is the most expensive in the world and many companies look for other counties where they don’t have to pay expensive salary. The number of big factories has been decreasing day by day. It is expected that this tendency will be continued. So people do not need to build many factories in Japan.
Finally, it is necessary for Japan preserve natural condition to improve the industry of tourism. Japan has a large number of beautiful scenery in nature, such as sea coasts, mountains and lakes. Tourism is one of most important industries in Japan because there are almost no materials there and Japan has to earn money by inviting foreigners to Japan for sightseeing. If Japan changed a lot of the natural condition to be houses or industry, there would be less foreigners to come to Japan.
As I mentioned, Japan does not need to develop the land for houses or factories because the population has been decreasing and there are many factories abroad instead of Japan. And Japan has to preserve nature condition to invite people for sightseeing.
