TOEFL score scaling - how many types?

Hello folks,
I have a question regarding how ETS scales TOEFL scores. Well the first type of scaling is obvious. They scale it to 0-30, as test takers can at most get 30 points out of each section.

I heard that the score is scaled based on how hard/easy each section is as well. So, for a hard exam, if you get 20 out 30 for listening, it may go higher.

Is this true? Is there any official source for this?

Hi Ahoss, welcome to our forum and many thanks for your question. Yes, ETS uses an algorithm that weighs questions and their corresponding answers based on their level of difficulty. However, their algorithm doesn’t use AI and big data which means it’s still rather biased.

Pleased let me know if this makes sense.

Also, it would be great if you could tell us a little bit more about yourself. What are your plans for this year?
