TOEFL essay sample: Should smoking be banned?

TOEFL essay sample

In my opinion smoking should definitely be banned in public places as it not only has delitirious effects on the non smokers present there but also may cause alergic coughing to many people.Besides, many youngsters are fascinated by the act of smoking and try to immitate it which may later develop into a habit.

Smoke which arises when a person smokes a cigarette, bidi or cigar is more hazardous to a passive smoker who inhales the smoke being in close vicinity of the active smoker. The smoke being inhaled by the former is unfiltered thereby causing more ill effects.Several pulmonary diseases such as cough, bronchitis, asthma and last but not the least carcinoma of lungs may occur as a consequence of smoking.

Many countries such as india have implemented a ban on public smoking. It has become mandatory to have no smoking zones in all eating joints, recreation centres etc. This practice may seem as a curbing of ones right to freedom especially to the smokers but surely this step will go a long way in achieving a healthier life style.Manypeople who gradually become aware of the ill effects of smoking are turning towards deaddiction centres to get rid of this habit.

Even the advocates of smoking in public areas dissapprove of the practice when it comes to their offsprings.Witnessing the elders smoking kindles similar desire in a youngster thereby giving birth to a new generation af smokers.

To avoid these evils of smoking and ensure a healthy platform for the youth it is not only our duty but need of the day to condemn such practices if not completely then atleast socially.

TOEFL essay sample: Should smoking be banned…?

Consider the idea that everyone is a smoker. Why, you might ask? Because smoking refers to the practice of inhaling smoke from the burning of tobacco, from a pipe, cigar or, more commonly, a cigarette. So when someone chooses to smoke, most likely someone else will be affected.

If one goes to a bar or even outside, one can expect someone to be smoking. That is only natural. But when a non-smoker is eating lunch or dinner, smoking in his or her presence can be offensive, especially when the smoker does not inquire whether smoking is alright.

Banning smoking in public areas is long overdue. This should be indeed practiced by all the nations of the world. Smokers would probably argue that they have every right and all the freedom to smoke to their heart’s content. But it should be emphasized to them that their killer second-hand smoke inhibits the rights and freedoms of people to live a healthy life. Yes, lives could be saved, but by banning smoking is being taken away people’s free will to live their lives as they choose. If someone wants to smoke, drink, overeat, drive too fast, bungee jump off a bridge, sky dive without a parachute, it’s their choice. All are dangerous, potentially life-threatening activities. However, we do not need a Big Brother to tell us how to live our lives. It would not only be right if smokers affect other people by what they do.

For instance, when asked if smoking should be banned in all restaurants, around three out of every five people surveyed agreed with this statement. When asked if there should be a total ban on smoking in hospitals, almost nine out of ten people surveyed agreed this should be the case. When asked if the health service should pay for smoking rooms to be provided in hospitals, seven out of ten non-smokers disagreed and even half of the current smokers disagreed, too.

But imagine what it would be like if smoking were banned. The ban would hand over yet another multi-billion-pound market to organized criminals. We all know that drugs are banned, but there are many people who are on drugs. Smoking is not that harmful as drugs, and there are much more smokers than druggies. And there would be many to start smoking in order to look cool. Just the same situation like the one we have today with drug-smuggling, but larger.

What do the politicians want? To have healthier citizens? To save money from medicine? Then they must ban alcohol, too! No, why only alcohol? What about chocolate? Don’t forget crisps! Well, why don’t they ban breathing, because oxygen is going down and they haven’t found an appropriate planet to move to yet? Because a call to ban these things is staggeringly naive. But this is what will happen after they ban smoking - they will ban them, too. It is a question of time.

I think we must concentrate on tackling real issues like poverty, racism and various other injustices and leave the others to do what they want with their health, unless we love them and want to help them. We just do not have the right to. But if they affect us, then we must do something about it, but banning smoking entirely is foolish and extremely naive.

TOEFL essay sample: Should smoking be banned…?

Smoking has been part of our life for many centuries now. It has evolve from simple tobacco type rolled in leaf to a more refined stick that has filter. Many people said that smoking makes them calm especially after eating. Other hate it so much because of the smoke it produces. Many studies have suggested that smoking carries with it many different disease complications and that it should be limited if not totaly banned.

One of the common result of smoking is that it is can cause pulmonary disease. There are many pulmonary disease brought about by smoking. Chronic Bronchitis is one of the common disease to mention. It involves inflammation or swelling of the air passages in the respiratory system coupled by production of cough and phlegm. It has been affecting a greater population in the world.

Another disease brought about by smoking is the called emphysema. This is a more advance disease than Chronic Bronchitis. It involves destruction of lung cells called alveoli. The alveoli collapse which causes difficulty in breathing because the lung cannot function properly. The lung collapse is also coupled by production of cough and phlegm that contributes to blockages in the lung.

The most serious complication of smoking is lung cancer. Studies have confirmed that there is a great association of lung cancer to smoking. In fact smoking account for 95% of lung cancer worldwide. Of course lung cancer is fatal. Meaning is can cause death once one has been diagnosed of it. And death from lung cancer claims million of life worldwide.

With little satisfaction and a lot of disadvantages it is only imperative that smoking should be limited or if possible totally banned. Life is so precious to be taken for granted. One may enjoy a temporary pleasures in smoking but the complication of it should always be kept in our mind. And one must always be reminded of the health advertisement that “smoking is dangerous to health”.

Hi ElenaUzunova,

My suggestions are in CAPITAL letters:

The purpose of this forum is to correct original material and not read what you have taken from the Internet

Alan, this essay was written by ME four years ago, and yes, I have taken some statistics from the internet, but it is MY WORK mainly. (especially the last few paragraphs) Sorry if I have offended you with something, but this is the only essay that has actual statistics. It is the best of all the others, and that’s because the facts inside are true.
If you saw this essay in another site, check the name of the person who submitted it. Sati is my nickname, Elena is my name, so it is possible to be submitted by either Sati or Elena.
Once again sorry for the offence.

Hi ElenaUzunova,

If that is all your original work, then clearly I am at fault. The first paragraph however is on the Internet under the name of Riley and it was on that I was basing my belief that it had been copied. You understand I hope that as I correct all these essays for people and the service is offered free, it is annoying to find that it is merely a copy. But enough of all this. Please don’t be put off from sending more material to be looked at and try to be as original as you can.

Best wishes

hi, alan sir
this is my first essay in this forum please give me some suggestions I need. i really wanted to improve my english.

Today, as we all know that smoking has became passion for people, regadless of age and despite of its harmful effcets.
However, If I have to give my opinion I would say that government should put a ban on smoking at public places, which will decrease the number of second hand smoker.

Smoking is an addiction, once it became habit one cannot quit it easily. for some people it is a means of enjoyment while for some it gives them a stressfree life. dispite of these positive purposes of smoking we count it as an addiction. the reason is, its harmful physical effects, such as many lung disorders and in severe case it results in lung cancer. In our country, suppose 75% of population is smoker, however, the rest of 25% are not totally safe because they are second hand smokers. these 25% people are more prone to its harmful effects as they inhale unfiltered smog.

Public places are always full of people,so we have more second hand smoker than actual smokers. if government restricts smoking to some designated places, at least we will have less second hand smokers. In addition to that smokers can enjoy it and they can’t complain about their freedom of enjoyment. After all they are also aware of the unhealthy conditions from smoking.

At last, i would say, smoking is a dangerous, it is always better to keep our next generetion as away as possible for us. bannig it at public places is a must to keep our country healthy and glomming.

Well, since smoking is more harmful to those who do not actively smoke, so called “second hand smokers”, a potential solution to this problem would be to have this 75% of active smokers quit smoking and this remaining 25% take it up.

This will result in only 25% active smokers in your country compare to 75%. Would this help

Hi hema,

Hi,

I don’t get involved in suggesting marks for essays sent to this forum as I am not an examiner for the exam.

I think there have to be some places where smoking should be limited and some places where smoking should be banned. It is because people who live in the country where is democracy they have the rights to be free so people who smokes should have the rule to smoke but the people who doesn’t smoke they should have the rules to not breath in smoke of cigarettes.
Where smoking should be limited? I think the office block is very good example. There are a lot of rooms where work people who doesn’t smoke and who smokes. So I think smoking there should be limited but there have to be the rooms or places where people can smoke but this place or room have to have very good ventilation.
The church or the Library are the places where smoking banned. The church is the place which require regard from people so if somebody wants to go there can’t smoke. If somebody can’t put off smoking should leave this place.
The Library is the place where are a lot of books and other papers. There are often a lot of old books which are very precious. Books are the materials which can burning very good so on account of many people who spends time there and the precious books smoking should be banned at the Library.
The theme of this paper is “should smoking be banned…?” I can’t answer this question yes or no. Smoking cigarettes is the problem in all countries in the world, it waste health of people and make a lot of disputes between people who smokes and doesn’t smoke. I gave some examples of places where people should subordinate the rules of smoking cigarettes but I think complete ban of smoke cigarettes isn’t good solution because people who smoke could hate the government which make up the rules banned smoking everywhere. I see only one way, the governments, health’s organizations and teachers at the schools should make adults and children aware of the smoking cigarettes is damaging the health of people who smokes and who doesn’t smoke but they breath in smoke of cigarettes. But only making aware of this problem isn’t enough, people who smoke need to replace cigarettes to different activity like sport or fun, for something which give them more satisfaction than cigarettes but youth need other activities to don’t think about begin smoke cigarettes.

In sum, when people realized that smoking is bad for their life and they will find something different which give them more satisfaction and which make them cool the cigarette’s problem disappear without buns. It is long term program and needs a lot of hard work from health’s organizations and governments but it is only one way because bans will not give effects.

Hi Alan, Could you please check my little essay?!
Thanks

I consider that smoking should be banned in those places where you usually go out with your family, because as you know when someone is smoking you are being a passive smoker, and it affects you more.
I think, that the people that smoke should respect some public spaces when its prohibited to smoke, instead they should smoke in their own smoking area, where they can do whatever they want. For example, when you go to a restaurant, you have the smoking area or non- smoking area, and people who choose the second one, shouldnt smoke at all, but there are certain kind of people who does that, therefore they are not showing respect for others.
As we know smoking is a big concern in the whole wide world, because its something that many people do, and to stop smoking for those who are addicted, is pretty hard. In addition that it causes many diseases, such as cancer in your lungs, also it contributes to pollution.
To conclude, I think that smoking should be banned in certain places that deserve a lot of respect, and as an illustration those places can be: church, libraries, kid’s play ground, museums, theaters, etc.

thanks a lot
