Hi, I’ve come across the following sentense: ‘Like most passengers, outwardly subdued by the monotony of air travel, he often lets his thoughts range across the possibilities while sitting, strapped down and docile, in front of a packaged meal’.
Please could you explain what ‘he often lets his thoughts range across the possibilities’ means?

Hi Irina,
This means that he lets his mind wander He allows himself to think about a whole variety of possible things he could do. You could simply use the word ‘daydream’ which covers this kind of mental activity.
Does that help?
