to keep or for keeping?

Dear Alan,

First i should thank you for your very very useful and lovely website. Then I’m wondering what is the difference between “to keep” and “for keeping” in the sentence below?

In hot countries people wear light clothes for keeping/ to keep cool.

When is it true to use to+verb and when to use for+verb?

Thanks a million
Best,
AquaMarine

‘For + -ing’ is a popular learners choice (perhaps it is similar to many native languages), but it is odd to a native speaker, who always uses ‘to + infinitive’ in this situation.
